Chapter 9

Once we’d retired to the deck overlooking the bay, another bottle of wine was opened, and the conversation naturally segued toward topics that had nothing to do with missing teens or nonexistent pieces of evidence.

“I stopped in at the video arcade today to check out the new games that were added in the past few days and overheard a couple staff members saying that Remi would be in town beginning tomorrow. Or maybe it was tonight. I’m not sure,” Jemma said. “But apparently, he’s planning an extended stay now that his house is almost ready to move into.”

“Beverly mentioned that she’d heard that he was going to be in town as well,” I said. “I haven’t heard this personally, but according to Bev, Remi was supposed to arrive today.”

“He wasn’t here as of this afternoon,” Jemma said.

“I’m surprised he didn’t call you and fill you in on his plans,” Parker said.

“We don’t stay in touch when he’s out of town,” I answered.

“That seems odd,” Josie jumped in.

I shrugged. “Not really. We’re just casual friends. Acquaintances, actually. We might share a meal when he’s in town, but there’s little more to it.”

Since almost everyone at the table was snickering by this point, I decided to change the subject. “Uncle Warren called to let me know that he’s sending me six cases of wine from the vineyard.” My uncle currently ran the family winery that was located in Northern Italy, which my father had run before he and my mother died in a small aircraft accident. The wine was some of the best in the world and went for a price that matched the quality, so six cases was a big score. “I thought we’d all get together and have a food and wine pairing.”

“That sounds like fun. I’m in,” Josie said.

“Me too,” Tegan seconded. “Josie and I will take care of the food if you plan to supply the wine.”

That was great with me since I wasn’t much of a cook. “I was going to invite Adam, and I’m sure that Jemma will inform Coop of our plans, so if the rest of you want to invite someone, I’ll have plenty of wine.”

“I might invite Sawyer to make up for the story he assigned me that I have no plans to follow up on,” Parker said.

“Are you sure that an invitation to a wine tasting is going to make up for ignoring a direct order?” Jemma asked.

Parker shrugged. “Probably not, and I’m sure he’ll be mad, but at some point, I really need to draw a line in the sand.”

“He could fire you,” Josie reminded her.

“He might, but I went into journalism to investigate breaking news stories and not to cover garden club meetings. I thought I made my point the last time Sawyer was in town, but it looks like I’m back to doing nothing but fluff pieces again.”

“I would think that Sawyer would recognize that you’re by far the best reporter that he has and would try to court you rather than intentionally make you mad,” Tegan said.
